The “Kick-Off” of a New Tradition: Girls Flag Football

This year, BT was proud to announce the formation of their first-ever girls Flag Football team. This team has only been preparing since late September and has already had great success in their first two scrimmages versus Cherokee and Etowah. The team is off to a tremendous start with these two wins. Emma Elizabeth, junior, defense, shares her enthusiasm about the team.  “The team is awesome,” she states, “we have only been together for a little while but we are already so close and it is such a fun environment to be in. The coaches are so excited for the season and bring such great energy to practice.” The sport has attracted the interest of many girls in all grades and from a variety of sports backgrounds as well. Mr. Brandon Harwell describes the team as “a very athletic group of players” and having lots of “multi-sport athletes on the team.” When approached by Coach Turner for the opportunity to coach this team, Harwell was thrilled to accept. Coming into the team, Harwell describes this as a great opportunity for BT and himself.  “With this being the first year of our program, our goal is to compete and grow each and every day.  We play in a very competitive area and classification but we are excited about the challenge.” Junior player, Jojo Miller, who also is a member of our very own BT soccer team, shares what she has enjoyed about playing under Coach Harwell. “I am so excited about this team! The coaches and all the girls are incredible! This inaugural year of flag football at BT is going to be amazing!” She, like the rest of her team, is looking forward to this year’s season and seeing how far the team can go. Being the first flag football team at BT may come with some pressure, but the team is committed to having an amazing and successful season and is excited to take advantage of these new opportunities. In fact, the team’s excitement stems from its sense of newness and possibilities. “The team is so special since it is BT’s first flag football team,” senior Elizabeth Freeman explains. Girls who would never have met otherwise are now more connected through this new team. With forthcoming games approaching, the team discusses its goals and visions for this season. The players talk about how they want to win BT’s first-ever flag football tournament. “I think our goal is to win and that would be so fun, but I think we also have a goal to really just set a path for future teams at BT.” Emma Elizabeth says, “because we are the first flag football team ever, it’s our job to really set the precedent for the girls after us. It’s a unique experience that all of us are excited about.” Her fellow team members and she share the same vision of setting the school tradition of flag football at BT. Harwell is looking forward to seeing what these players will accomplish this year and in the future. The team invites all students to come out and cheer them on at their upcoming games, which includes the team’s home game on Tuesday, November 9th at 5 p.m. Let’s go Titans!
